Web Site MaintenanceOverview
When web site is published on the Internet, the web site need to be monitored, evaluated, reviewed and updated. Maintenance of a web site starts with the owners intention to publish a web site, then it focus on its users needs, habits and preference, which is why the web site is published in the first place, to give its visitors useful information. A web site also promotes image and reputation of its owner whether it is a company, a brand name, a product or service, an individual or a community. Having to stumble into an out-dated information on a web site will, more often than not, frustrate a visitor. An out-of-date web site, be it for its content or design speaks for itself about its owner.

When I first started Boyink Interactive some six years ago now, Burco was one of my first clients. The site was done - by client request - in MS Frontpage. Their hope at the time was that they’d be able to make changes to it internally, but as time went on that never really happened. The intermingling of content and design in the FrontPage interface was both overwhelming to get through and risky - one wrong mouse click and you could delete the entire navigation bar from that page.
So I was happy to re-pitch the project and catch them up to current technology when it comes to small business sites, and get them implemented on a database-driven site using ExpressionEngine.
The design was provided by Burco’s current graphics designer, and Boyink Interactive did the ExpressionEngine implementation. The site is driven by 8 EE weblogs, and all navigation is created through the use of EE’s relationships. The locations functionality and the online catalog are handled through the use of an iFrame - this approach let us build and host the site externally while leaving some current business applications and work processes in place.
Currently in development is a consumer-oriented version of the site, which will use ExpressionEngine’s Multi-Site Manager to allow Burco to manage both sites from one EE install.

I'm actually scheduling myself and Boyink.com as a client after my current projects are complete so have been kicking around ideas for the next version of the site and my related marketing materials.I know I want my site and brand to be more fun, fresh, have more 'bounce' -- essentially have more 'Boyink'...but I've been getting stuck on what exactly that translates to in a design. So let me throw this out there for any past/current customers or readers of this blog -- what's the Boyink Interactive brand to you, and how should the site change to reflect that brand?

read more: Designed For A Change Article PublishedDuring the development of a software product we all make numerous design decisions. Some decisions are done in early stages of development, while analyzing the requirements and gathering the overall architecture of the product. Other design decisions are done during the lower-level design. Finally, even during the implementation of the a single component, we are often in position to weight several design options against each other.
In the following discussion we will examine one of the common design aspects, which is the source of numerous design dilemmas: should we design the product such that it will be ready for a future change (in the requirements, in technology etc.), or should we settle for a straight forward implementation? When is our product “sufficiently-designed” and when is it “over-designed”? In other words, how can we find the golden path when it comes to designing a software system to be ready for future changes?

read more: This weeks accessible web design tipDoes your website use a table to place the navigation bar on the left hand side, and the main content on the right? If that is how your site is designed, it is no bad thing; visitors will instantly understand this design 'convention' and won't have to waste time trying to figure out how to get around your site. There is however a problem with this 'standard layout' for people using screen readers. Accessing a website using a screen reader is a 'linear process'; the text that comes first, gets read first - and if the navigation is the first thing on the page - that is what gets read. If your navigation bar contains a lot of links, that can mean a lot of wasted time before a person using a screen reader gets to the content of your page.I was recently reminded of a very elegant 'table hack' , while reading, 'Building Accessible Websites' by Joe Clark (http://www.joeclark.org/), that can help users get around this problem. Instead of coding your table in the conventional manner as in the example below:
| Navigation menu | Page Content |
You can use the following rather elegant 'hack' to ensure the content on your page is presented first, and the navigation second:
| (put a single pixel gif here) | Page Content |
| The navigation menu goes here. |
As you can see it uses a 'empty' table cell in the first row which is directly above the navigation bar, and then the content cell is in the right hand cell (the content cell spans both rows). You might need to study this for a second or two to figure out what is going on, but if my explanation doesn't help, have a look at the following page where it is covered in a little more depth: http://www.apromotionguide.com/tabletrick.htmlRegister for the weekly MCU accessible web design tip.

Content Page Design Best Practices talks at IA Summit 2008, I presented a framework for thinking about how to optimize content pages for the dynamic ecosystem of the Web instead of the structured hierarchy of a Web site.

Content Page Design Best Practices (4MB PDF)Notes from my talk:
Fulfilling the Promise of Content Pages -Geo Voices
Content Page Design Best Practices -kev/null
LukeW's Content Page Design Best Practices -Whitney Hess
Content Page Design Best Practices -Roger Zender
Official Description:In today’s social, distributed, search-driven Web, customers are finding their way to Web content through an increasing number of distinct experiences. Yet when people arrive at most Web pages, the experience they get isn’t optimized for this context. Instead, the vast majority of content pages online remain more concerned with their own context than the context of their users: where did a user arrive from and where are they likely to go next? These pages remain designed as if they were primarily accessed from a Web site’s home page or a carefully thought-out selection from the site’s information architecture.
To address these issues and more, this talk outlines a set of best practices for Web content page design that focuses on appropriate presentations of content, context, and calls to action. Specifically: how can content be optimized to meet user expectations as they arrive from a diverse number of access points; what is the minimum amount of context required to frame content appropriately; how can the most relevant calls to action be presented to maximize user engagement? Applying these considerations enables information architects to deliver content experiences that take full advantage of emerging opportunities online and the existing assets within their Web sites.

read more: Design Comes in ThreesThough the word design gets used to describe lots of things (visual stylings, system architectures, interactivity, etc.), I’ve always considered it to be three things:
- A profession
- A problem-solving methodology
- Communication
In particular, a lot of recent articles on Functioning Form have focused on the third point –design is communication- especially as it relates to the strategic value of design.
- It’s Simple. Design Communicates.
- Iterative Holistic Communication
- Defining the Problem
So naturally I found it interesting that when was asked to define design in one sentence each of the panelists in
Good Design vs. Great Design emphasized communication:
- Cameron Moll: Design is about communication but cannot exist without a medium of some sort.
- Veerle Pieters: Design is away of communicating emotions. It expresses feelings so its design.
- Jon Hicks: Debate how ugly design or no design wins it misses the point that design is about communication.
Also of note was
Cameron Moll’s comment that “the feedback I've been privy to seems to indicate the developers enjoyed [the panel], while the designers felt it was a bit too Graphic Design 101.”
On a related (only by threes) note, BJ Fogg pinged me about updating a link to
his book on
User Experience Comes in Threes. Which made me recall a few Venn diagrams I’ve encountered since the original post.
First up is Diego Rodriguez’s considerations for a great user experience from
Design 2.0 in San Francisco:
- Desirability (human factors)
- Viability (business factors)
- Feasibility (technical factors)
Next is Dirk Knemeyer’s anatomy of a product from the
Future of Digital Product Design (PDF):
- Business
- Technology
- People
Lastly, to tie it all back to design as communication is
my list of three things an interface design should communicate to customers/users:
- By addressing the question “What is this?” we communicate usefulness.
- By addressing “How do I use it?” we communicate usability.
- By addressing “Why should I care?” we communicate desirability.
